Now a part of the Mandarin Oriental group, this pedigreed, copper-topped building has been an Upper East Side fixture since 1926, when it housed tony private apartments. The Mark still boasts an upscale, yet understated, residential feel. Its spacious rooms, some with terraces, overlook Madison Avenue, a courtyard, or 77th Street; the last option provides the most light. The rich interiors are arrayed with mohair chairs and ottomans, armoires with Asian details, and Frette linens. The French-American Mark’s Restaurant has both a Master Sommelier and a Tea Master, with the latter presiding over the lovely traditional afternoon tea service. For a more active pick-me-up, the gym offers exercise equipment, steam showers and a sauna. Free weekday shuttle service to Wall Street is another perk, and the Mark’s proximity to Museum Mile makes it ideal for art hopping.
Extras
Pros: The elegant amenities and Upper East Side locale make for a sophisticated stay. Plus, the hotel is well suited to kids, who get milk and brownies with their turndown service.
Cons: It’s a trek to get to downtown’s restaurants, bars, and clubs.
