Profile

When Madison Square Garden was located across the street, the Mayfair was a hot spot for performers, be they acrobats or boxers. But the Garden moved in 1968, and this hotel's current incarnation only evokes a glamour it once attained. Black-and-white portraits (Astaire, mid-stride; Bacall, recumbent) line the walls of the wood-paneled lobby while the shuttered bar and silent piano behind the registration desk tell of glory days long gone. The rooms are pleasant enough, with toile wallpaper and simple white bedspreads, but scuff marks on the staircase walls, grime in the older bathrooms, and an occasional musty smell will discourage those seeking romance in their retreat. The King rooms at the front of the building are at least reasonably sized, but everything else feels like a wallpapered closet. For the price, that seems about right.

Pros

Family-owned since 1940, the Mayflower boasts a friendly and responsive staff.

Cons
You’ll have to pretend it's 1940 if you're looking for something luxurious.
