Profile

This chic, downtown branch of the W Hotel chain brings together contemporary design, luxuriant details, and up-to-the-minute technology. Located inside the Beaux Arts building that formerly housed Guardian Life, the hotel borders the East Village, Flatiron and Gramercy Park neighborhoods, and overlooks Union Square Park. Rooms, decorated in shades of chocolate with purple accents, are decked out with a feather pillow-topped mattress, down comforter, and leather headboard, plus a velvet armchair and well-stocked “Munchie Box.” Guests may order selections for the CD/DVD player from the hotel’s 24-hour library. Room service, business services and a fitness room are also available, as are discount passes to the New York Health & Racquet Club, two blocks away. The W New York’s Italian-Mediterranean restaurant Olives—an extension of chef Todd English’s global chain—and sexy lounge UnderBar make it a destination for natives as well.

Pros

It’s perfect for business travelers seeking a stylish vibe, high-end comforts, and a downtown locale that’s not too far from midtown.

Cons
Most rooms have a shower stall only, and unlike other Ws, there’s no spa on-site (though in-room massages may be arranged).
