According to its website, the West Side Inn has a lot going for it: a decent location, self-proclaimed bright, airy rooms and very affordable rates. The good points, however, don’t make it beyond the computer screen. In person, there’s the dingy lobby and an unhelpful, uninformed receptionist. Reservations are very unreliable, and most of the amenities that are supposed to come with the rooms are frequently missing or broken. It gets worse: rooms are incredibly small, even by New York standards; the sheets are ancient and dirty looking; the hallways smell; the bathrooms smell worse; and there is a perpetual shortage of towels. The 86 rooms range from $20 dorms (with 2 bunk beds) to $100 double-double rooms, equipped with two double beds. Everybody shares the three bathrooms per floor, regardless of room type, and they are, of course, frequently out of order. Needless to say—stay away.
Pros
More a bad, overpriced hostel than a hotel, the only things approaching value are the $20 a night dorm rooms.
Cons
Poor service, dingy rooms, shared bathrooms (even if you stay in a suite), and dirty everything.
A Guide to the New Hotel Glut
There’s never been more lodging here, and the rooms have never looked this good.
