Homestay New York is a matchmaking service for visitors from abroad who want to experience the city from the perspective of true New Yorkers in the best way possible— by living with them. Potential guests fill out the application on the service's Web site and the owner, Helayne Wagner, scans her list of participating homes, choosing a match based on guests’ needs and the services and amenities the hosts offer. Host residences are spread out in Manhattan and Brooklyn and are predominantly bed and breakfasts or homes where the owners–typically professional couples with families–rent out a guest room. Additional perks: guests get complimentary Unlimited-Ride MetroCards to use on the subway for the length of their stay and a $5 phone card to call home. Accommodations range from $100 to $130 per night.
