The creators behind the Safety Tour understand that different kids learn in different ways. The program begins with a music video where lessons are transposed to hip-hop rhymes. Shortly thereafter, a history lesson (delivered by a retired firefighter) contrasts modern equipment with antique firefighting tools. Finally, there's a trip to a mock apartment—site of a final exam of sorts. After pointing out hazards like an overloaded outlet and a precariously placed hair dryer, the room slowly fills with harmless theatrical smoke. Kids then follow directions that allow them to escape safely. Though the tour is designed with school or camp groups in mind, anyone interested in attending can call ahead to see which sessions haven't been filled.
