Unlike their acclaimed animated flick Persepolis, Satrapi and Paronnaud’s new live-action, magical-realist adaptation of Satrapi’s tragicomic 2004 graphic novel—about a musician who loses his will to live in fifties Iran—doesn’t stick to the stylized illustrations of the original work. As such, it can’t quite find a cohesive tone, and doesn’t amount to the compelling tale of wistfulness and longing that it should have.
