What’s most remarkable about music-video director Anton Corbijn’s Ian Curtis biopic is what doesn’t appear in the film. Missing from this account of the troubled Joy Division singer’s last years are the usual narrative devices found in any story about musicians: inter-band politics, the excesses of fame, a drug habit. Instead, we get a cadenced character study of a young man come undone by the mundane troubles of a meaningless marriage and an epileptic condition. The result is deeply haunting.
