Review
Ingmar Bergman described Fanny and Alexander as “the sum total of my life as a filmmaker”—reason enough to see the film now, five months after Bergman's death. The intimate epic about a young boy whose mother marries a strict Catholic dives into the filmmaker's biography, evolgin like the phases of his art: through aesthetic severity, then brutal unsentimentality, and, finally, into the more comprehensive humanism of Bergman's later works. But this premiere of the original cut, running at 312 minutes, leaves room for more than a story of one life.
