Little Fugitive (1953)
(No longer in theaters)
A young boy runs off to Coney Island after mistakenly thinking he’s killed his brother.
The little renegade: Engel’s lovely little 1953 drama was one of the first true American independent films, shot on a dime and striking a tonal balance—alternately gripping and languorous, humorous and devastating, sentimental and clinical—that genuinely sets it apart from pretty much every other film made during this era.
