Gorgeously filmed, thoroughly engaging encounter with a working-class family in Herkimer, New York, explores how generations of bad decisions—mostly connected to a series of poor choices in boyfriends—have created an ugly cycle of poverty and limitations. Despite the subject matter, it rarely feels exploitive, and the inventive framing—the story begins on Halloween and ends on Halloween one year later—only adds to its lyricism.
