In the French director’s latest bit of stone- faced provocation, a devil-like character wanders the countryside, dispensing both salvation and damnation with seeming randomness. Despite his resolute artiness, Dumont has a facility with slow-burn tension that helps this film along. But the whole thing is less insightful than he thinks: This is one abyss that doesn’t stare back at you.
