“It’s pure Hollywood, but the humanism gets to you.” So says David Edelstein, considering this story of an Egypt-born U.S. resident who gets snatched up and tortured by the CIA as a terror suspect. We’d settle for pure Hollywood, but this sounds like our kind of humanism, highlighted by Reese Witherspoon, who plays the poor guy’s pregnant wife: She’s “very touching as she waddles around knocking on doors and fixing people with her ice-blue stare.” (Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, and Meryl Streep also show up.)
