Ozon has made some strange films over the years, but his latest—a kitchen-sink drama about a single mother and her very, very special son—takes the cake, with its mixture of social-realist grit, sensitive characterizations, and fantastical plot. As such, it recalls a Disney movie reimagined by Neorealists, and we’re not sure that’s a bad thing.
