Donnie Darko’s fevered cult has been eagerly awaiting round two from director Richard Kelly for six years now. To put it mildly, the batshit crazy Southland Tales—an absurd mash-up of mutant Iraq-war vets, neo-Marxist rebels, and nuked Texans standing pat at the edge of the end of the world—is not what they were expecting. David Edelstein says the movie “doesn’t go off the rails because it never has rails to go off.” That said: “Love it or laugh at it, you will gaze on Southland Tales with awe.” Our take? “It's like watching Howard the Duck with a high fever.” In other words: awesome.
