Unbowed by cruel reviews of his novel, Ethan Hawke adapts it into a surprisingly moving film about a young singer (Catalina Sandino Moreno) who falls in and out of love with a whiny, obsessive actor (Mark Webber). The talky, earnest result clearly draws on Hawke’s experience with Richard Linklater—and, thankfully, it feels more sincere than calculated. Webber channels Hawke’s mannerisms and speech rhythms—but in a more successful manner than you might expect.
