New York writer-director-actress Dunham’s tragicomic ode to post-B.A. ennui is carried by her sharp dialogue and terrific ability to simultaneously embarrass and endear us to her—but it’s also laced with a much darker story of exploitation, self-loathing, neediness, and intrafamilial resentment. A rich, multi-faceted work.
