A forgotten bebop granddaddy is rediscovered in Raymond De Felitta’s obsessive documentary. The late jazz singer Jackie Paris used to swing with Charles Mingus and Charlie Parker before he dropped out of the scene—but the determined De Felitta somehow manages to dig him up. His documentary is a fine companion piece to Bruce Weber’s Chet Baker biopic Let’s Get Lost, though it’s far less romantic. This film is as much about fandom as the music itself.
