Ramsay’s adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s prize-winning epistolary novel tracks the relationship between a fortysomething woman and her sociopathic, spiteful son, from her ominous, anxiety-riddled pregnancy to his adolescent homicidal rampage. Miller’s chilling, calculated portrayal of the disturbed teenager will definitely stay with you, but the film belongs to Swinton: Her performance is absolutely seismic.
