Kelly Reichardt’s ominous and uncluttered film is anchored by the heartbreaking performance of a lanky, sad-eyed Michelle Williams, who plays a broke young woman on her way to Alaska to start a new life. Though it goes without saying that the story of a cash-strapped life resonates right now, the film’s sense of dread is so subtle that it won’t hit you until after you’ve left the theater. — Miranda Siegel
