German director Christian Petzold’s surreal drama isn’t a thriller in the traditional sense—the suspense is pervasive but subtle, and the big-shock moments are muted and understated. Still, it’s one of those films that keeps swirling in your brain once it’s done—thanks both to its somewhat unresolved ending and to the many subtle themes touched on throughout. Nina Hoss, who stars as a downtrodden lost soul, is quietly riveting.
