Theater Profile

Located next to luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman and across from The Plaza Hotel and Central Park, this posh, single-screen theater screens independent and international films. Opened in 1948, the Paris Theatre is the longest continually operating art cinema in the United States. Not as plush or as large as the nearby Ziegfeld Theatre, the Paris can still seat almost 600 people and includes old-school stadium seating, as well as a balcony. These days, the theater features mostly foreign films and holds select movie premieres, such as Moulin Rouge, The Others, and Iris. The nostalgic throwback to old New York may also look familiar to some television viewers: Sarah Jessica Parker’s character in Sex and the City saw a flick here in an episode that focused on her rediscovering the joys of the city. The Paris’ major drawback is that the lobby is extremely small, so most patrons have to wait in line outside, no matter what the weather. — Sandra Nygaard
