For someone who has spilled a prodigious amount of ink attempting to undo the caricature of liberals as lily-livered elitists, it’s ironic that the cover of Eric Alterman’s newest book, Why We’re Liberals: A Political Handbook for Post-Bush America, is itself a cartoon (drawn by Tom Tomorrow, of “This Modern World” fame) depicting an array of liberal greats, among them Einstein and Franklin Roosevelt. Then again, Jesus is in there, too, in case there’s any doubt over whether Alterman has a sense of humor about the current culture wars. Indeed, he might be the smartest smart aleck around, and Why We’re Liberals offers up more than a few cannonballs to drop on the other side of the aisle.
