To survive the perpetually percolating onslaught of the Seattle superchain, an independent coffee bar needs a rabidly loyal clientele and an exceptional product. This cozy little café has both. Owners Stephen Leven and David Elwell are so obsessed with coffee that they roast 71's beans on their Hudson Valley farm, and brew two different blends every day (plus flavored and decaf). That gives regulars the chance to experience the aromatic nuances of organic Indonesian Sumatra Mandheling, winey Ethiopian Yrgacheffe, and the signature Irving Farm blend. — Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld

Kinda pricey, but a cool hang-out

This place is right next to Gramercy Park, and the prices follow. For a pastry and a coffee, it will cost you around $8-$9. It can get pretty crowded, and it is a very intimate setting especially if you can grab a nook at night. With good company, this place is a very fun.

Snobby owners, always get the order wrong

The place is too expensive for what it is ($4.65 for a chai, please), they ALWAYS get the order wrong, it takes forever to get something and despite my co-workers and I sticking it out and going back numerous times the staff was always rude (well, not the guy, just the women really). The person before me ordered and was confused about the menu (rightly so, since it is BEHIND you as you stand in line, not in front of you) and the women and the counter was rude to him, then before taking my order made fun of him. This place needs a serious attitude adjustment. But they are the kind of place that if they heard that would say I needed one. They are really obnoxious and the food is only so-so.
