The name of this UES eatery is also its working phone number—but you can expect more than just tacos to go at this festive Mexican spot. Twinkling Christmas lights, brightly painted walls, and colorful straw hats adorn the restaurant, which serves huge portions of affordable eats, washed down by pitchers of sangria. Customers—many from nearby Sloan-Kettering and the Weill Cornell Medical Center—grab seats at the small eatery’s wood tables and order off the menu from a selection of south-of-the-border favorites, like a cheesy spinach quesadilla; nachos piled high with chicken, cheese, and salsa; and burritos and tacos. While some items, like a too-tangy mole burrito, miss the mark, other dishes, such as tender pork tinga tacos, are right on target. And though the restaurant’s low prices make it a favorite spot for takeout and delivery, Aprovecho’s cheap, cold Coronas and the occasional live music act make it a good choice for dine-in eating on First Avenue.
