Located on a stretch of Second Avenue known for its raucous Turtle Bay singles scene, Café Soleil is a welcome respite for those who seek more than an appletini garnished with a stale pick-up line. The handsome dark wood and marble bar at the front of the restaurant belies the bright yellow dining room adorned with sun-shaped mirrors, white tablecloths, and brown leather banquettes up the few stairs in back. The Mediterranean-inspired menu leans heavily towards seafood, with a raw bar, some choice pasta dishes including a spaghettini with lobster medallions, and a selection of simply prepared grilled fishes. Though the emphasis is on the sea, there's also a mini chophouse roster. The 32-ounce porterhouse for two won't make anyone forget Lugar's, but it's perfectly serviceable if you don't want to have to leave the neighborhood for a steak. A smattering of alfresco tables is tucked neatly into a reasonably romantic nook of recessed sidewalk, making Soleil a nice alternative to the surrounding party pubs.

There's no private dining area, but the entire restaurant can be rented for parties.
