El Bocadito, Spanish for "little bite," is inspired by Mexican street-vendor food. Inside the long, narrow restaurant, the menu kicks off with snacking items like chips and guac, quesadillas (made with handmade tortillas), and esquites, two halves of a roasted corncob slathered with a tangy-sweet coating of mild cheese, lime, mayonnaise, and chili powder. Seasoning is big (think cinnamon, chocolate, and cilantro) but judicious, occasionally flaring into tingly spiciness, as in the chilaquiles, where chiles give a mellow heat to the creamy casserole without shouldering aside the softer flavors of Oaxaca cheese and tortilla. The mole sauce on enchiladas, meanwhile, is stoked to a fiery degree. Tacos are inexplicably bland, but that shouldn't keep you away: With its smoky blown-glass lamps, modern Latin soundtrack, and fun, south-of-the-border list of beers, wines, and cocktails, this cantina creates a low-key urban chicness that raises street-food to new heights.
