Taking its name from the chef’s hometown on Hokkaido Island, Esashi projects a friendly mom-and-pop feel. A few prints of Japanese characters enliven the mustard-avocado walls, but unquestionably Yukihiro Ishiyama has spent more attention on handling raw fish than conceiving interior design. While udon soup, tempuras, and teriyakis are available (and all quite good), most diners come here for the fish, with sushi savants sticking to the specials. Behind the square dining area abutting Avenue A is a small sushi bar; further in the back are a handful of tables clustered on weathered wood floors. The wear on the tabletops attests to longevity (since 1991), which on Avenue A all but amounts to ancient history. Wife Minako serves dessert so there’s some family history too.
