At this dark and narrow pizzeria, votive candles tucked into brick walls reflect in an oversized gold-framed mirror that tilts toward the diners and opposes a few large, three-dimensional oil paintings. Most eyes, though, are drawn to the glinting copper accents of the open kitchen and the flames of its hard-working, wood-burning oven. That oven—coated with small colored tiles—fires up the menu's mainstay: thin-crust pizza. From traditional pies to La Nostra (a folded pizza with mozzarella, basil, and thickly cut fresh tomatoes) to a kid-worthy confection that sandwiches Nutella with ripe strawberries, the best dishes at Gioia offer a chewy bite. Outside the oven, an amalgam of Southern Italian piatti proves hit or miss. The one recurring meat entrée, a half roasted chicken, flaunts a crisp brown skin and moist meat, but the portion is small; the pastas are poorly executed; and the ricotta-glutted Pizza Fritta tastes like fried dough leftover from San Gennaro. Only desserts escape crust envy: The warm chocolate soufflé isn't only cocoa rich, it also cajoles the French vanilla gelato into a pseudo crème anglaise.

Like most pizza joints, Gioia does delivery and takeout; unlike many, their pies' chewy crunch can withstand the dreaded delivery-box steam bath.

Recommended Dishes

Asparagi gratinati, $8.95; la nostra, $10.95; chocolate soufflé, $7.95
