Profile

Smith Street's restaurant row has seen its share of openings and closings—more than a few of them at this address alone, which went from the clam-shacky Pier 116 to the creative-Japanese Taku, and has now been converted by the Taku team into the less-expensive Italian-inspired La Lunetta. Chef-partner Adam Shepard has swapped his Berkshire-pork ramen for hanger steak, and his signature chicken wings for fried artichokes. The rest of the menu hews to the increasingly prevalent small-plates format, with an assortment of wine-friendly cured meats and cheeses. The redesign encompasses red tufted-leather banquettes and antiqued sconces, and the garden seats 30 as long as the weather holds.

Overpriced and overrated

The signature cocktails were too sweet (and expensive for Brooklyn at $11 a pop) and service was sub par. The bill came out to be $75 per person for some shared bruschetta, wine and a (small) entree per person. It seemed a bit expensive for a place that won't give you a clean fork and spoon between courses.

A Lovely Surprise!

We did not have a reservation, so we waited for a seat at the "bar" along the open Kitchen and decided to eat there. The service was terrible in the beginning (the hostess was nervous, uncomfortable and rude - taking phone calls and adding people to the waiting list while we, and others, were lined up waiting to speak to her - we were not the only ones that had to complain). But the food, was really , quite amazing and put us at such ease. Watching the kitchen, we began to get excited about what to order - the food looked amazing, we sampled several appetizers, each delicious. And then moved on to their perfectly made pasta. The food was well seasoned, well cooked, simple and flawless. What a lovely surprise. I recommend not only the restaurant, but sitting at the bar with the opportunity to see how all this amazing food is made!
