You can add this modish spot in the San Carlos Hotel to New York's ever-growing population of high-end Indian restaurants. It has all the compulsory features: an impressive wine list, colorful cocktails, and a futuristic look, the latter achieved here with a swanky ceiling covered in rows of red and orange lanterns that provide an attractive counterpoint to the eerie mint-green glow emanating from behind banquettes. The menu's offerings span the subcontinent, reaching even to the Himalayas. The execution of these dishes can sometimes be sketchy. Some lack flavor; others are oversweet. But the array is alluring, from bhel puri, Mumbai's snack food of puffed rice, onions, chutney, and spices, to Bengali fish curry to lamb cooked in the styles of Goa (spicy) and Sikkim (aromatic).
Recommended DishesMint chicken kabab, $17; aloo paratha, $6; lemon rice, $6
