There are two kinds of hotel restaurants in this town: the ones that happen to be in hotels, like DB Bistro Moderne or Jean Georges, which also have a big local following; and the ones where chances of spotting a New Yorker eating in them are as good as finding a reasonable room rate during holiday season. While the Millennium Broadway's Charlotte was once a contender for the former, its current scaled-down version has made it the epitome of the latter. Years ago, publishing types preferred the vaguely art deco marble and cherrywood room; now only tourists, business travelers, and out-of-town theatergoers sparsely dot what feels like the lobby's annex. A comfort-driven menu striving to please such a crowd, consequently, offers little of interest, but there are a few worthwhile bites mingling among the middling steaks, salads, pastas, and sandwiches. Crunchy ground beef mini tacos, for example, will satisfy a craving for Mexican food and a generous pile of macaroni baked with four quality cheeses show some spark of skill in the kitchen. For those travelers too weary to stumble down the block for better options, Charlotte can certainly satisfy in a pinch.
