Profile

This venue is closed.

To successfully debut in Brooklyn’s robust Middle Eastern cuisine scene, it helps to have a hook, and at A la Turka, it’s the bread: dense, chewy, coated in sesame seeds, and, in a savvy nod to the Park Slope palate, made of whole wheat. “We bake it right here,” says the owner proudly, thumbing to the ovens in back. This homemade touch sets the tone for the amiable one-room Turkish eatery. Teardrop lights cast a warm glow onto dark-wood tables, and a row of French doors maximizes the restaurant’s corner perch: Diners gaze out, passersby look in, and it all feels very neighborly. A la Turka dutifully mines its country’s culinary canon—grape leaves burst with wrinkled currants and whole pine nuts—but it’s the inventive detours that make you sit up and take notice. Check out the grilled hand-chopped lamb kebab kneaded with red peppers then artfully arranged with a tangle of pickled red cabbage.
