Adä ("AH-duh"), which means "style" or "flair" in Hindi and Urdu, presents a refined, high-end version of traditional Indian cuisine. Standard North Indian food is enlivened with regional dishes from Goa and Kerala along the Malabar Coast, and revivified with a delicate use of ingredients. The white pea cake, Aloo Tikki, includes bananas and a bit of crème fraîche, and the Seekh Kebab, usually made with lamb, here features goat. There's the garam masala, mint chutney, tamarind and coriander one expects, too, of course, and the flavors are melded expertly, if relatively innocuously. (The heat is adjusted to American palates.) The design of the dining room is similarly geared to a mellow experience: The deep-red color of the chairs and banquettes pops against the neutral canvas of creams and whites throughout—from the carpeting to the sweeping staircase that punctuates the center of the dining room and ascends to a private dining space above. As with the dinner menu, the desserts mix the conventional with the innovative, the Eastern with the Western. The most traditional of the sweets—and one of the most successful—is the Kheer, a sort of semi-liquid rice pudding, here dotted with minced fruit and served in a martini glass.

I remember my first time...

The first time I went to Ada, I really wasn't in the mood for curry. We sat for a late lunch, actually, I think a little too late. However, the waitstaff seemed very accomodating and just let us know that we should put in our order as soon as possible as the kitchen was closing. Even so, they didn't seem pushy. When we asked for more naan, immediately the waiter brought out another plate. More curry? That as well. Generously sized, each plate was simple yet powerful. The garlic naan was aromatic, the mushroom samosas were amazing. The curry delivered and did not overwhelm the rest of the meal. The chicken was unbelievably tender and delicious. Every bite melted on the tongue, all my senses indugling in a divine meal. At the end, when the bill came, we were shocked that there weren't extra zeros attached to the end. For what we ate and the quality, our lunch was almost had for pennies. However, do not be fooled, as their dinners do indeed get expensive. Both my friend and I left in a daze, and I'm still frequenting Ada.

All shopped out at Bloomie's? Recharge at Ada. If you go early enough in the evening, snag a seat in the front window. It's like dining outside (and inexplicably, there were a few flying insects as if we were indeed outside. For now I'll chalk that up to the door opening and closing so much). We were so hungry we skipped appetizers, but the rosemary naan is a must. We also got good mojitos in deceptively large glasses. Though the entrees sound very un-Indian (we tried the lamb chops and beef tenderloin) the spices remind you that you are indeed at the right place. The caramelized banana torte is the best dessert I've had in a while and beats keer hands down.
