AG Bistro—not to be confused with its neighbor ten blocks south, AG Kitchen—is a sidewalk café that evokes both Paris and New York. Square wooden tables with small wicker chairs line the sidewalk out front, while things are airy and bright inside. Funky paintings adorn white brick walls, and a muted TV behind the wooden bar brings an American touch. The menu features above-average dishes dotted with French-American influence, including lightly fried ham and Gruyère croquettes served with a sweet cranberry-fig compote for dipping, as well as heavier and delicately greasy chorizo-filled pigs in a blanket with a dressed-up mustard sauce. The classic French onion soup is decadently creamy in texture, stuffed with sweet Vidalia onions and bread with a crust crispy enough to withstand getting dunked in broth. The approachable wine list promises a choice for even the pickiest wine drinker, without overwhelming a vineyard novice. As an added bonus to a perfectly pleasant meal, AG Bistro promises to donate a portion of its proceeds to Hayden’s Heroes, an ALS-focused charity in the name of one of the founding partners, consulting chef Gerry Hayden.
