Profile

This Upper East Side Italian spot definitely has its own thing going on. The floor is greener than one of Hillary Clinton's pantsuits. The man behind this operation is Salvatore Corea, formerly a partner and executive chef at Spiga and a current operator of Cacio e Pepe and Bocca. This is his first venture with wife Gina, whom he met while cooking pizza at renowned Italian spot La Berninetta. No pies on the dinner menu here — there are meat and cheese plates, pastas such as fettuccine tossed in white veal ragù, and entrées like lavender-crusted swordfish steak over a bed of spinach.

A disappointment

We wandered in during Restaurant Week, and though the prix fixe seemed a bargain (especially vis a vis a la carte), it really wasn't. Despite an enticing menu (all sorts of odd, intriguing ingredient combos), the results were dull: e.g., the cannelini bean puree with "anchovy oil drippings" tasted like thin gruel, and the pork loin with spicy honey sauce meant dry slabs aswim in a pool of insipid sweetness. Nothing awful -- but nothing good, either. We thought we were venturing into the well-trod world of exquisite neo-Italian fare than New York is known for; no such luck. Oh, and the decor -- windowless back room with leatherette seats -- was commensurately drab. On the plus side, the owners and servers were gracious. That's just not enough, though, to compensate for the menu-to-table gap.

Perfecto!

Great Italian food. Creative and satisfying. Warm inviting setting with a very nice decor and effective lighting. Creative desserts including Blueberry Bavarian Cream with wild berries and lemon liqueur foam are to die for. I don't live near by at all yet it was a great experience, it was totally worth it!
