In a second-floor space on a busy stretch of Brooklyn Heights, Amin serves up standard Indian dishes to a laid-back group of neighborhood regulars. Its décor resembles a battered, cozy seventies living room with red velvet walls, scratched wood wainscoting, and dim lighting. The food is similarly homey or ho-hum by turns, depending on the section of the menu it comes from. Chicken dishes excel; the popular chicken tandoori is set on a sizzling metal platter, the meat expertly grilled to falling-from-the-bone tenderness and flavored with a healthy squeeze of fresh lemon. Chicken malai sets soft chunks of boneless meat in a satisfying savory cream sauce of puréed coconut flakes and mild yellow curry. Vegetarian dishes prove less appetizing; fried vegetable pakoras taste freezer-burned and too oily, and malai kofta offers cauliflower heads in a bland tomato-and-cream sauce to little effect.
