Profile

With its chic SoCal decor and warm bohemian ambience, Angelica Kitchen deserves its reputation as one of downtown's best date spots for vegetarians. It's been around for years now, but the menu continues to be consistently creative, attracting not only vegetarians but health-conscious diners of all stripes. The famous walnut-lentil pâté is as flavorful and richly textured as any meat variety; and desserts, despite the absence of eggs and refined sugars, are necessary indulgences here (definitely order them topped with maple-tofu whipped cream). Entrees ranging from salads, sandwiches, and Angelica's signature "dragon bowls" to nightly specials that often incorporate Asian and Latin American influences feature fresh, unusual organic produce along with the standard protein bases of tempeh and tofu. You could easily eat here dozens of times without getting bored—as the line outside the door would suggest.

If I could, I'd eat here every day!

My default setting is cheeseburgers and Pop Tarts, but Angelica never fails me. The daily kanten parfait trumps any cookies-and-cream ice cream out there, the cashew spread is a country of flavor, and I'm as obsessed with their chili with the Southern-style cornbread and butternut squash and red onion salsa as Wylie Dufresne is with Eggs Benedict. This hardcore meatatarian never feels deprived digging into the dishes here. Plus, the communal table means I can skip to the front of the line. (Great, now I've just convinced myself to go there again tonight ...) Yum!

bland food

cute place, nice vibe and concept, but the service was so-so and the food was very bland. We enjoyed the appetizers, but a little salt, salad dressing, and seasoning would have been most welcome to complement some wonderful ingredients.
