With fifteen seats, three tables, and a sliding door for a wall, Animals' setup isn’t ideal. But the sandwich outpost operating out of cocktail bar, the Wayland's rustic, tchotchke-lined expansion makes good on its upgraded kitchen. The chefs have masterfully made a bacon sandwich feel like a feasible midday meal option, one that when paired with Madhouse potato chips and homemade soda, still won't leave you comatose. (Though if you opt for the eggs, bacon, or caviar add-ons off the "Swag" menu, it may be a different story). Between braised apple-and-chili chicken, a trout-and-bacon offering, and a cauliflower sandwich that stands up against heartier and meatier options, Animals' only real downfall is its hours; it’s not open on nights or weekend days. Were it a Saturday to-go stand, Animals could easily serve as a summertime pre-picnic mecca. But, for now, it seems its glory is reserved for lucky eastside dwellers as well as the freelance set.
