Set among the overgrowth of dingy bars and cheap eateries near St. Marks, this lively diner underwent renovations in 2007. But even with its newer if unremarkable interior, the eatery still lures the young and the penniless with its huge menu, affordable booze, and its commitment to the unalienable right for huevos rancheros at three in the morning. You can expect to be sitting cheek by jowl with a thicket of hungry NYU students or East Village revelers at this spartan space unless you’re outside on the eight-table deck during the warmer months. Don’t expect any culinary revelations at these prices. Indeed, the burgers can be parched and lifeless. Nevertheless, reliable breakfast fare, along with some thoughtful sandwiches and Tex-Mex standbys, succeed in delivering the satisfactions and regrets which any late-night haunt worth its grease banks on.
Happy HourDaily, 4 p.m.–8 p.m.; $2 drafts, $3 well drinks
Recommended DishesBlueberry pancakes, $4.95; black bean nachos, $3.95; St. Mark’s sandwich (turkey and Swiss on raisin-walnut pumpernickel), $5.25
