Profile

Don’t let the name fool you. Neither the garish paintings of Technicolor taxicabs nor the Italian food qualify as art in the true sense. But for its faithful NYU clientele, ArtePasta gets the essentials right: it’s cheap; it’s got a party-hearty atmosphere, and the portions are huge. The signature lasagna is a towering pile of cheese and noodles in a platter-sized dish of chunky Bolognese sauce; rigatoni quattro formaggi is similarly doused in a soup of creamy gorgonzola, fontina, mozzarella, and provolone. Skip the oddly Tang-y all-you-drink mimosas on the weekend for the $4 giant martinis during happy hour and you’re infinitely more likely to get into a festive spirit emphasized by red Christmas lights strung in the window all year round. It may sound sacrilegious, but the best offering on the menu is a juicy cheeseburger, served on crispy foccacia and accompanied by shoestring fries.

Mediocre food, bad service, lousy attitude, hidden charges

The place used to be great, but things have changed for the worse. Their Vegetable Panini became dry and undercooked and the secret sauce that made it great last time is gone. Instead, they now have an unadvertised policy of charging for regular coffee refills (yes - that's $2.50 every time they top up your coffee cup from the pot) and automatically adding an 18% service charge to your bill (there were only two of us at the table). When we complained to the manager, she told us it's always been this way (no - it has not!) and we should just pay up. With this new attitude and lack of good taste, you're likely to have a better experience elsewhere.

I love this place

I live in the neighborhood and come all the time. Not only is the food very good (they can actually cook spaghetti to just the right tenderness unlike 80% of other restaurants in NYC), but I'm amazed at how cheap it is. FOr $16.95 you can get an awesome, three course special several nights a week. And the place is very classy! The alcohol specials are very good too
