Profile

Ashbox Café sits, fittingly, between Ash Street and Box Street, on the industrial — and fairly desolate — northernmost end of Greenpoint. The space is homey and tranquil: Mismatched chairs flank low wooden tables, dozens of jars of loose tea sit on the counter, and wall shelves hold vintage cookbooks and cat figurines. The food itself stands in contrast with the tchotchke-heavy aesthetic: spare, clean, and refreshingly inexpensive. The Saturday breakfast special comes with matcha, kimchee scrambled eggs, brown rice, and a bright salad dressed simply (but deliciously) with a miso-yuzu vinagrette. The popular Japanese onigiri, fists of sprouted brown rice wrapped with Nori seaweed, come in Umeboshi plum (sour and, beware, unpitted), grilled salmon, and scallion miso, which is spread thickly beneath the seaweed. The crowd skews Greenpoint hip — a bespectacled artist at the next table over seemed to enjoy his bowl of tofu served with grated ginger and scallion so much that he almost slipped up during his conversation about world cinema.

Recommended Dishes

Kimchee-and-eggs breakfast special, $9.75 (weekends only); scallion-miso onigiri, $3
