A cool vibe plus easy prices spells success for any eatery within stumbling distance of NYU. This mod plexiglas pod delivers both, with a few splashes of color tweaking the Barbie-goes-to-Tokyo design. Circa-1969 furnishings, like curving white plastic chairs and pink floral tabletops could be cast-offs from the set of The Dating Game and predate the young crowd (no doubt breaking between all-night study groups). A loud, thumping soundtrack heightens the stylish cacophony amid which tasty, thoughtfully turned-out fare makes an unexpectedly welcome surprise. Fifteen tapas are divided into five categories: classic, lighter, vegetable, heartier, and sweet. The tender hanger steak gets high marks for its rich red-wine reduction sauce, while artichoke a la Greque earns extra credit for its lemon-laced, stewy blend of chokes with root vegetables. An airy chickpea crepe, however, needs more oomph than the barely detectable pecorino Romano and dots of tapanade. The dessert list isn't only sweet; it's short, with only a Gouda apple strudel on offer. Askew proves that some campus-convenient eateries do rise above mediocrity. Plus, it beats the heck out of the Student Center.
