On the edge of Nolita and Chinatown sits this warmly lit restaurant where spice-laden Malaysian dishes meld with a relaxed neighborhood vibe. While the space itself is narrow—the seating consists mainly of one long strip of tables—the flavors at this neighborhood Malaysian restaurant are bold. The husband-and-wife duo at the helm serve up an affordable menu bolstered by fragrant curries (they do an exceptional one made with mussels), affordable small plates, like a fresh and vibrant mango-avocado roll, and gigantic portions of homey Malaysian fare. Fill up on tolemak, a rice made with rich coconut milk, and the well-balanced take on seafood laksa (a spicy, brothy, noodle soup). Even a side of steamed greens, which is nothing more than bok choy, shines after being blanched and sautéed with garlic-and-soy sauce. Aside from the name (aux épices is French for with spices), the only other appearance of French influence can be found on the dessert menu. Tarts and cakes are made in house but aren’t memorable.
