Linger over a scrambled-eggs-and-apple-pancake breakfast until three in the afternoon, or come for dinner, when the pastry counter becomes a wine bar, votive candles flicker on tiny tabletops, and the menu shifts to sophisticated French-American fare like sweetbreads, foie gras terrine, and crisp roast duckling.

Cozy little bistro on the the corner of 85th and Columbus makes for a pleasant sidewalk dining experience where people watching is half the fun. The menu is simple and straightfoward, filled with the usual suspects of entrees (duck, steak frite) but has an interesting starters menu that may be better than the entrees. The wine list needs some work but all in all, a solid value fitting for a neighborhood restaurant.
If you love French Roast you will be surprised how much more you come to love the Avenue Bistro. It is much more quiet and unassuming with a slightly more limited menu, but every item is done to perfection. Brunch is my favorite meal here, with a wonderful fruit plate, great egg choices, wonderful pomme frites in a cute silver cone, and oatmeal that puts all others to shame. Lunch and dinner are both excellent as well, and for a very reasonable price, you get food worthy of a five-star restaurant (sans the attitude). A courteous and friendly wait staff that doesn't rush you out the door adds to the charm of the place.
