The owners of this sleek Tribeca tapas bar traveled to the Basque country to pluck two promising young chefs from cooking school in San Sebastián, where they were immersed in the traditional arts of garlic shrimp, tortilla española, and ham croquettes, not to mention paella (the restaurant's name means saffron).

Nice decor, excellent service. Atmosphere too stiff for tapas setting. Price is stiff too. Good food though but all dishes add up!

Our first dinner at Azafran left me intrigued, feeling it was the best tapas place in New York, but a repeat tonight was disappointing. The tapas were fine but the paella was terrible. Service was okay but considering the place was almost empty, they could have filled the water glasses without my having to request it each time. Sangria was excellent. Of the tapas, the boquerones (anchovies) were our favorite. The tortilla was fine. Meatballs weren't outstanding. Each dish runs about $9 or so and it's a fun concept so we may go back but I'd be careful about what we're ordering. The artichokes sounded more promising, turning out to be three centers soaked in olive oil and garlic, not as tasty as sauteed artichokes.
