Profile

No longer exclusive to the West Village scene, Belgian food and its signature triple-fermented beer have arrived to B. Cafe's two locations in Lenox Hill and on the Upper West Side. This narrow, miniscule space features a polished wooden bar up front; a handful of tables are set against exposed-brick walls at the back, for a semi-rustic feel. Suds savorers might blanch at only five options on draught, but B. Café offers an impressive selection of bottled brews, as well as obscure spirits, like genever, as liquid counterpoint to the hearty, stick-to-your-ribs Belgian fare. Options run from the requisite moules frites prepared six ways to Hoegaarden and garlic to red curry and coconut to richer fare, like a sticky and dense beef stew christened "Duvel carbonnade" for its dark-beer braise. And B. Café may have one of the best burgers uptown. Oozing with juice, the oversized patty features a secret blend of spices, a thick slice of Gruyère, and a heap of sautéed mushrooms, all sandwiched in a crusty, grill-toasted bun.
