Profile

Though it doesn’t bill itself as a speakeasy, Bahr Ché is quite hard to find. Started as a post-crash business by an ex–Wall Streeter, the Cooper Square wine bar (the misleading address is Astor Place) is marked only by a small metal sign. Once you slip in through the curtained doorway you’ll find a warm yet coolly industrial hangout. The wine list aims to introduce lower Manhattan to wines from small producers from around the globe. Selections, which range from a fruity Austrian Zweigelt to an earthy red from the Loire, are sold by individual carafe or by the bottle. For those who prefer grain over grape, there are beers by the bottle, which range from domestic IPAs to Belgian lambics. A menu of small snacks, meats, pâtés, and cheeses follows in the eclectic suit of the wines.
