Fluorescent lighting and Formica tables may give Banana Leaf a colorless feel, but this quick Bay Ridge takeout spot boasts a vivid menu: traditional Malay fare, which embraces dishes influenced by Chinese, Thai and Indian cuisines. Just as the fixtures of the historically Italian neighborhood thrive on pasta, this spot knows its noodles — which come both appealingly varied and cheap; a choice of four kinds of rice, such as the brown, chewy Nasi Kunyit, is the other starch option. Among the large entrées, the steamy roasted duck, glazed with a sweet peanut sauce, has a thin layer of fat and crisp skin, and comes with gummy candy-like lychee fruit stuffed with whole chestnuts. The Ikan Pangang pairs a moist, flaky white skate filet with a spicy ginger-chili eggplant-okra mash, an appealing mix of hot and mild. If you don’t mind soup for dessert, the bowl of Buboh Chacha holds a warm, sugar-saturated coconut broth with sweet potatoes and little tapioca pearls nestled at the bottom.
