Profile

Following in the footsteps of pioneering restaurateurs before him, Georges Forgeois, the empire-building force behind Bistro Jules, Café Noir, and Le Singe Vert, has entered the Smith Street fray with a Brooklyn bar and bistro of his own. Francophiles will appreciate the artfully aged environs, the wine list, the bar snacks, and the obligatory steak-frites and onion soup.

I have stopped going to Bartabac entirely after a run of bad experiences. The service is lousy. The food is oily and the people that run the place are jerks. I once had to wait 45 minutes during a slow lunch service to place an order. I recommend Char down smith street, which has food in a similar price range and courteous knowledgeable staff. Jolie on Atlantic Avenue is far from perfect, but if you have to get your French food, eat there. It also has seating outside in the back. I know the sidewalk cafe of Bartabac is tempting, but I would rather buy a ticket to France and wait in airport security. I would probably get my food quicker that way, too.
